By: Adam Eidson

The health and fitness industry is worth more than $80 billion and they’re ripping you off.

The fitness market is evolving at an incredible pace, with new business models, training concepts, and trends emerging weekly. Yet, with all the success of the fitness market, people are getting less healthy and fit. Why is that? The answer lies within some simple truths the health club industry doesn’t want you to know.

Here are the 5 keys to getting your health and fitness back.

1. Sleep 7-8 Hours per Night

Fact, the number #1 way to get healthier and fitter is to get more sleep, no gym membership required. According to neuroscientist Dr. Matthew Walker, director of UC Berkeley’s Center for Human Sleep Science, if you’re getting 6 hours of sleep or less, your time to physical exhaustion drops by up to 30%. The lower your peak muscular strength, lower your peak running speed and a higher injury risk.

Walker explains: “how a good night's shut-eye can make us cleverer, more attractive, slimmer, happier, healthier, and ward off cancer.” In his new book Why We Sleep, Matthew Walker explains how we can harness sleep to improve learning, mood, and energy levels, regulate hormones, prevent cancer, Alzheimer’s and diabetes, slow the effects of aging, and increase longevity. This book is amazing and will help you understand why sleep is vital to our health and fitness. So, above all else set a goal to get more sleep and see your health improve.

2. Hydrate to be Great

Up to 60% of the human adult body is water. According to H.H. Mitchell, Journal of Biological Chemistry 158, the brain and heart are composed of 73% water, and the lungs are about 83% water. The skin contains 64% water, muscles and kidneys are 79%, and even the bones are watery: 31%. Every day we must drink water to survive and how much you need to drink varies according to age, gender and where you live. As a rule of thumb, adult males need about 3 liters per day while an adult female needs about 2.2 liters per day. Some of the water you ingest daily will come from the foods you eat. Start drinking more water today.

3. You are What You Eat

Do you understand why you’re getting fat? According to Men's Journal, the United States ranks #9 as the fattest country in the world and our country is getting fatter.  Why? Because people truly don’t understand the relationship between the 3 things that make up food: Protein, Carbohydrates, and Fat. Let’s compare how these 3 macronutrients work to a teeter-totter. On one side we have insulin and on the other side, we have glucagon. Insulin and glucagon are hormones that are both affected by how we eat. The goal is to keep these 2 hormones balanced to help regulate our hormones. Insulin is elicited by eating carbs and/or sugar and is considered the storage hormone and keeps things in our cells. Glucagon is elicited by eating protein and lets things out of our cells. Fat is hormonally neutral and supports a steady state. Stick to eating a well-balanced diet consisting of meats, vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and little to no sugar. Think of this as the perimeter of the grocery store diet.

4. Get Moving

Get outside and do something. Ride your bike, go for a jog, play a round of golf, shoot some hoops, walk your dog, play pickleball, take a yoga class, just get up… get moving and do something. According to the Mayo Clinic there are 7 major benefits to get moving: weight control, combat diseases, improve mood, boost energy, promotes better sleep, spark your sex life, and it’s fun and social. You don’t need a gym or money to do any of the above activities, but you do need to start. So, today get up and get moving… it starts with you.

5. Two Hours per Week

About 2 hours per week is all you need to get in great shape. I know… I know, some places say you only need 20 minutes per week while others say you need to be in the gym for 1 hour per day, 5 days per week. With well over 20 years experience in the fitness business, RARE CrossFit and our results speak for themselves, more than 60% of our members only work out 2 hours per week. We’ve trained people to lose 100lbs and run more than 100 miles in a 24 hour period, only working out 2 hours per week. Pay for a membership you can afford where you will get “on the floor” and “off the floor” coaching. Meaning, you will be coached how to do proper movements and techniques in the gym, while also being taught what to do at home and outside the gym. About 2 hours per week is all you need for tip-top shape.

Remember the truth about health and the 5 keys to get your health and fitness back: block two hours per week for training, hydrate, eat a well-balanced diet, get more sleep and move often.
