5 THINGS TO DO TO BE FIT AND HEALTHY IN FREDERICKSBURG - RARE CrossFit Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, and Stafford’s premier CrossFit Facility!

Did you know Fredericksburg is filled with a fascinating history and has a lot more to offer than Colonial and Civil War sites and a walkable downtown Historic area? There is shopping, dining, galleries, and antique stores as well as many other things if you like to be fit and healthy? The challenge is choosing whether you want to get fit and active outside or inside. There are plenty of options and my top 5 fit and healthy things to do in Fredericksburg include:

  1. Virginia Outdoor Center (VOC)
Located in Downtown Fredericksburg, the Virginia Outdoor Center provides river trips by canoe, kayak, tube and stand up paddleboard down the Rappahannock River. They also provide rock climbing, backpacking, fly-fishing, ropes courses, and outdoor instruction for all ages. The VOC is locally owned and community supported providing rentals and guiding for everyone. If you’re here in Fredericksburg you definitely want to stop by the VOC.

Maybe water isn’t your thing and you’d rather stay on dry land to see Fredericksburg and all it has to offer? Well, Fredericksburg is a bike-friendly town with a great paved trail system, which starts right in front of the Virginia Outdoor Center. My number two pick for healthy and fit things to in Fredericksburg is:

  2. The Rappahannock River Heritage Trail
Grab your running shoes or your bicycle and hit the trail downtown to explore museums, restaurants, parks, and many historical sites. The Canal Path is a paved pathway that is 1.8 miles long and winds along the canal from Fall Hill Avenue to Princess Anne Street. The Rappahannock River Heritage Trail is a 1.6-mile asphalt stretch that connects the two parts of the Canal Path making a 3.1-mile loop, just about right for a 5K race. Trails are open all day, year round. The Rappahannock is never more than a couple of blocks away, so make a stop at Old Mill Park to cool off, or enjoy a picnic by the shore.
  3. Olde Skool Tours
This is my favorite and Fredericksburg’s most unique way to get exercise and tour the town. Olde Skool Tours has Pedal Bike offering locals and visitors an exciting and engaging way to enjoy touring Historic Downtown Fredericksburg while getting fit and healthy. Grab your friends and family and take a seat, their bike seats 15 patrons! They offer Historic and Coffee tours by day and Pub Crawls by night. If you haven’t already, be sure to contact Olde Skool Tours and schedule your tour now!
  4. Pickleball
Pickle-what??? I know, I felt the same the first time I heard the word. Pickleball is a growing sport described as “a combination of ping-pong, tennis, and badminton”. Pickleball is a fun game that is played on a badminton court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center.
It is played with a perforated plastic baseball (similar to a whiffle ball) and wood or composite paddles. It is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. Pickleball is FUN. It is also a great work out.
  5. Fredericksburg Quarry Trail
For many, many years I’ve run and ridden the trails at our local quarry. The Fredericksburg Quarry Trail System is an urban gem located within the city limits of Fredericksburg. Regardless if you like to walk, run, or bike, this trail system is simply amazing with an abundance of bridges, log obstacles, creek crossings, steep climbs. Nested on the shore of the Rappahannock River, the trail offers great scenery as you push yourself through the 300-foot elevation change across the entire trail system. You definitely don’t want to miss taking a trip out to the quarry trails.

My 5 top fit and healthy things to do in Fredericksburg are just a small sampling of everything this beautiful town has to offer. Five major Civil War battles were fought here and the University of Mary Washington makes it’s home in town. What’s at the top of your list of fit and healthy things to do in Fredericksburg?
