Thursday – Fear Not

There are a few things in my life that still scare me.  Not paralyzing fear, just enough fear to make it interesting.  Scared enough to make my heart race and my head to spin just a bit.  Some of these things are my Crossfit workouts.  There is one workout that particularly causes me some mental anguish and some fear.  FRAN… It’s a relatively simple workout at its core.  It’s not fancy or overly technical.  Containing only 90 repetitions total, for Crossfit workouts it’s short.

Fran is the workout I fear the most.  This workout developed an almost Holy Grail reputation in the Crossfit community.  It can show you just how fit you are or are not.  I have never been one to put all my eggs in one basket.  I feel fitness is a journey and can’t necessarily be rolled into one particular workout.  The reputation remains…Get a good Fran time and you are fit.

I have come to fear this workout because it is the workout that I have done the most times in my time doing Crossfit.  I have been forced to try to better my time on this workout the most.  The workout contains one strength and one weakness of mine.  In my opinion, having one strength and one weakness cancel each other out.  With that being said, it does not make for a very low time.  I go fast on one of the alternating elements and slow on the other.  So I go medium… not terrible, just not great.

I have never had the best attitude about this workout either, and I will say that has been the biggest dilemma keeping me from accomplishing my goal time or even improving by a small margin.  So, I have the opportunity to do this workout today and I have decided to turn a new leaf.  I will fear not…

Fear not… getting a new personal record time, fear not… the pain in my body while performing the elements,  fear not… letting myself down.  Fear not, fear none of it!  Just go hard and do what I am capable of accomplishing.

I don’t know if I will get a new personal record.  What matters most is that I have made a decision to have a better attitude about something I don’t prefer to do.  I have made the decision to fear nothing and get the work done.  If I can do it with this particular workout, I believe there is hope for other areas in my life that I am holding myself back because of fear.

I will take down the barriers of FRAN… I will FEAR NOT!

I’m glad she’s gone again… but she always reminds me I have more work to do!

Great job Rise! I am glad she is gone too. I remember when we could barely get through Fran with the green band and a lot less weight on the bar. Oh, how CrossFit makes us stronger, Fran too for that matter.
