Six months ago, I was lying on the operating table having an emergency c-section. If you’ve never seen a c-section, please YouTube it. Two layers of tissue cut right through! Fast forward 6 months, I now have enough definition in those stretched-out, cut-up abs to have a “2-pack” for the first time in my life. The key was the RARE coaches. They embody motivation. By encouraging me to go a little faster, lift a little more and put down that bread, I ended up in the best shape of my life. Never thought that was possible, let alone post-baby.
But that’s not my favorite part of working out at RARE. It’s the people. The coaches cultivate an unique sense of community. Everyone is there pushing each other to get better, to go faster. It doesn’t matter if someone is putting up a PVC pipe or their body weight. You will have someone cheering for you. Someone will be right next to you getting you to do things you never thought you could.

“I started to get back into shape starting in June 2010. I was running mainly and felt as if I was getting into decent shape. I ran the Richmond half marathon in November 2010 in 2 hours and 31 minutes. I continued running and ran the Mairne Corps Half in the spring of 2011 in almost the same time. I was still weighing about 300 lbs at the time down from a high of 340 in the spring of 2010 and felt pretty good about myself. Norah Pence kept pushing me to join her at Rare Crossfit and see what it would do for me. So I did and wow, I did not know i could get so sore. From the begining at Rare the coaches have made me feel welcome and are always very positive. Adam encouraged me to do the better body challange and I did it this summer. They provided me with a nutritional program/ challenge that is very effective and easy to stick with. I have never enjoyed a workout routine like I do crossfit, the people are great and have a way of making me feel accountable to them and my goals. I have lost an additonal 30 lbs in the 4-5 months since I began crossfit. I am stronger more flexible than ever before. I go 3 days a week and run 1 or 2 days that I am not at crossfit. Even with running less per week, this weekend I ran the Richmond half marathon, and in one year I reduced my time from 2 hours 31 minutes to 2 hours 10 minutes. I am very proud of the 21 minutes and I credit Rare Crossfit with the overral improvement in my physical shape and running.”

I wanted to take a moment and say “Thank You”. Since joining RARE CrossFit six months ago I have seen a significant improvement in my fitness. As an Ultrarunner my training was full of high mileage weeks and many aches and pains associated with the constant beating of all of those miles. The staff at RARE has been so helpful in dialing in my nutrition and helping me to understand how I need to fuel and how to recover. I recently completed the ‘Grindstone 100” which is a 100 mile trail run, my soreness during the race was less than any previous 100 miler and my recovery was minimal. Receiving your call to attend a recovery workout less than 10 hours after the race was priceless. I use to think of myself as an Endurance athlete, I now proudly say I am a RARE Endurance athlete.

When I walked into Rare in March of 2010, I was out of shape and overweight. I had set personal fitness goals and was looking for a place to help me make them happen. Adam and the entire staff at Rare welcomed me with open arms and have become like a second family to me. Since joining Rare, I’ve lost over 25 pounds and am stronger and faster than I have ever been in my life. I Crossfit 5 to 6 days a week and run once a week. With the help of Adam, his staff and the training at Rare I ran my first half marathon last year and will be running my first ultra-marathon, a 50k this spring. Rare has reenergized me to live a healthy life and given me a place to compete and train that is more than I could ever ask for.

“My entire life I have battled my weight, I have spent the the majority obese and unfit. I have tried every diet program, every gym, everything and I had given up on ever having a health body, let alone a healthy me! Then I found Crossfit, more like was bribed by my husband to join…it has CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER! I was never a runner, hated working out, poor diet you name it, I was not a star athlete, I was not any kind of athlete. After just 2 months I took the RARE CrossFit Better Body Challenge and in 5 short weeks I have never felt better. I lost 11 pounds and went down over 2 dress sizes. I finally get it! I get the work outs, the food, the everything, it all finally makes sense, it works! I won this seasons Challenge, me of all people. I have now lost almost 30 pounds in 4 months, I have a whole new and Improved me. If I can do it, anyone can. Crossfit has given me my life back, its has become my favorite addiction. I ran my first 5k this Thanksgiving, having never run a race in my life. I finished in under 40 minuets. For most runners thats nothing to brag about, but for me its amazing and its because of Crossfit. I want to be healthy, I want to eat better and I want an awesome Crossfit Body. Its not perfect now but I am well on my way.”

“This year I made a commitment to myself that I would continue to work on my
core strength when I was done coaching my high school team. You see, I do
all the core workouts with them (I don’t believe in making someone do
something that I can’t do myself). But normally once the season is over I
kind of drift away, and before you know it by the end of the racing season
I’m suffering from injuries again. I know it’s because of a weakened core
strength/stability.
I contacted Adam, and started up the first week of February. I was sore,
really sore after the first week, but it was fun, and I also knew it was
good for me. Since working with Adam (and training partners Rise and
Shelley) I’ve seen improvements in posture, upper body strength, and most of
all the nagging injuries that had plagued me for months have disappeared.
My hip flexor strength (hell, my legs in general) have more speed and power.
I also have had great triathlon coaches as well, but adding the Cross-Fit
has helped me to step things up a bit. Today (SPCA 5k) I had my best 5k
time in over 2 years! And I look forward to a successful season as well
when I compete at USAT Short Course Triathlon Nationals and as part of TEAM
USA for the World Duathlon Championships as well.”
