Sugar binges, shopping sprees, excess social media, alcohol, escape into TV land, overtraining, the list goes on and on. People use any and/or all of these methods of instant gratification to create a sense of fulfillment only to discover that it didn’t work.
Instant gratification is a byproduct of unfulfilled, highest values. When we are feeling unfulfilled we use quick fixes to create a sense of fulfillment, but this instant urge for self gratification is not long lasting. But people keep repeating those patterns in a blind effort to get satisfaction that, in most cases, ends up being detrimental to their health.
This behavior creates a disconnect between your mind and your body because deep down inside, YOU, are still searching for fulfillment. As William James said: “Nothing of the senses can ever satisfy the soul”. Instant gratification is a lower order effort to fulfill a higher order calling. We are who we are and we are driven to fulfill our values.
So, we challenge each RARE Athlete to challenge themselves starting today and lasting 1 week. If you feel the urge for instant gratification and you reach for your typical vice…chocolate, that certain TV show, facebook, etc…..STOP yourself…and decide YOU deserve better. Grab a nice piece of fruit, pick up that book you’re halfway through and finish reading it, or simply go to a quiet room and meditate for 10 minutes. You’ll be surprised how you feel…now…and later.
Will be discussed in class.
