As a kid, I was not very athletic and my nutrition was abysmal. I grew up on a farm and thought the work I did there was enough exercise; but I often wondered, why aren’t I getting stronger or losing any weight?
After High School, I joined the U.S. Marine Corps and I eventually leaned out, got stronger, developed a better understanding of fitness, and nutrition. I went from barely passing the Physical Fitness Test (PFT), to a First Class PFT score which consisted of being able to knock out 20 dead hang pullups, 200 crunches, and a 3 mile run in 20 min, 15sec.
Following my time in the Marines, my focus turned to my education and career. I spent the next several years in college and working a full-time job. My fitness was not a priority and bad habits returned. With the support of my wife, we started signing up for local races, 5K, 10K, ½ marathons, etc., which forced us to get into the habit of running in order to be prepared for the races. This worked well and enabled me to finish my first marathon in just over 4hrs. I also started lifting weights again at the local Globo-Gym, but did not see any improvements and eventually became frustrated with it. Looking back now….it was really boring and I did not have the stimulation necessary to make any noticeable improvements.
About 5 years ago, I injured my lower back and shoulder making it very painful to run. It was at this time that I took the plunge and started CrossFit. It took my already bruised ego and knocked me down even further. I almost quit. I stuck with the program and through the support of the RARE coaches I have made significant improvements in my strength, and have learned so much about nutrition. I can easily say that I am stronger and overall more “fit” at 40, than I ever was at 20.
As a coach, my goal is to help people become more confident in their abilities, instill a sense of continual improvement, and dig deep to achieve what they thought was impossible to do.
